WHAT IS THE TANNING PROCESS?Tanning beds use UV or Ultraviolet light to tan your body. Since there are three types of UV light - UVA, UVB, and UVC - tanning beds are designed to use more levels of UVA with lower levels of UVB on your skin to promote the production of melanin, the pigment that makes you look tan even if you don't spend time under actual sunlight. The most harmful of UV light is the UVC which tanning beds filter out so that you only get the best forms of UV light.

ARE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR TANS THE SAME?Just like the natural sunlight, an indoor tanning system produces ultraviolet rays. The difference is that only UVA and diminished UVB rays are emitted and no UVC. Other factors of outdoor tanning such as time of day and year, altitude, cloud coverage, pollution, reflective surfaces, etc. can radically change proper exposure times outdoors. The tanning process is the same indoors, however, there is definitely more exposure control.
-
WHAT ABOUT PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR?You must wear protective eyewear as your eyelids do not provide protection against the ultraviolet rays. To avoid the risk of easily transmitting infections, we recommend purchasing your own eyewear.
-
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET A TAN?Many skin types will show colour change after the second or third session. Most can achieve a beautiful tan after 8-10 full sessions. After that, only one or two times per week will maintain your golden tan indefinitely.
-
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INDOOR TANNING?Besides healthy looking skin, indoor tanning can duplicate other beneficial properties of sunlight. There is strong evidence that sunlight (and indoor tanning) is known to: Help us produce Vitamin D Increase the body's ability to absorb calcium Stimulate the thyroid gland which boosts your metabolism Help combat depression and induces an energized feeling of well being Build your skin's resistance which helps protect against over exposure Help in the treatment of acne, psoriasis, and eczema Stimulate the male sex hormone which can increase sex drive

WHAT ARE INDOOR TANNING LOTIONS?Indoor tanning lotions are scientifically designed for a tanner's skin. They are formulated to work with your melanin, speeding up the tanning process and creating a natural deep tan. All tanning lotions are divided into a 4 step system and are exclusive to tanning salons. Step 1 products: No bronzers, no worries! Accelerators, or Maximizers, are designed for beginner tanners with little or no existing tan and jump start the development process of a golden tan. A properly developed base tan is the first step to a healthy long lasting tan. Step 2 products: Natural ingredients like charcoal, caramel, henna, and chocolate - yes, CHOCOLATE! Natural bronzers provide streak-free, stain-free results Step 3 products: Formulated for advanced tanners that have an existing base tan. Expect deep, dark results. Delayed bronzers give you the long lasting glow you want. Step 4 products: Formulated for advanced tanners who want to break their plateau. Tingles increase the skin cell's microcirculation and oxygenation to produce deep, dark tanning results. You'll notice rosiness but don't panic - you're not burnt! It's just your blood coming to the surface. This will subside between 30-40 mins.
-
WHY IS MOISTURIZED SKIN IMPORTANT FOR A TAN?Healthy, moist skin will tan quicker, get darker and keep its tanned appearance longer because the melanin is produced rapidly and the skin also will not exfoliate as quickly when it's properly moisturized.
-
WHEN SHOULDN'T I TAN?You should not tan if you have tanned within the past 24 hours or if you are taking photo-sensitizing medication. This will enhance the tan and often cause you to burn. Ask your doctor to be certain you can tan if you are taking any kind of medication.
-
WHY DO SOME PEOPLE ITCH AFTER TANNING INDOORS?Rashes or itching occurring on the body after ultraviolet light exposure are not an indication of skin disease, but of dry skin or a photosensitive reaction. They are often caused by a combination of heat from the tanning lamps, a lack of sufficient melanin in the skin being tanned and ultraviolet light. Both irritations usually subside within several days after tanning has stopped.
-
I'M PREGNANT. IS IT SAFE FOR ME TO TAN?Medical professionals do not know the effects of heat on the unborn child. We recommend you take advantage of our UV-free spray tanning services.
-
WHAT IS A CUSTOM SPRAY TAN?Tanning occurs when the skin produces pigment to protect itself from UV rays. In custom tanning, the tanning solution is applied by a technician using a spray gun and sunless tanning solution. The tanning solution contains an active ingredient, DHA (or dihydroxyacetone), that reacts with the outer layer of skin, producing a bronzing effect. The maximum generation of colour is reached within 8-12 hours, so the colour will continue to darken after the initial application. Most of the added bronzer will come off in the first shower after application. We recommend the client does not use their best white towels and favourite white sheets for at least 2 days after the spray tan application. Some bronzer may transfer onto clothing, however with Norvell Sunless being a natural and organic product you can throw it in the wash and it will come right out.
-
WHAT RESULTS SHOULD I EXPECT?When sprayed, the bronzer (colour guide) will produce an immediate colouration. The DHA tan should develop within a total of 8-12 hours. After the bronzer is washed off, a beautiful natural tan should result in skin colouration that is 1-2 shades darker. Multiple applications will produce deeper colour. It must be emphasized that the pigments resulting from a spray tan DOS NOT provide UV protection, but may minimize burning.
-
HOW SOON CAN I SHOWER AFTER A SPRAY TAN?Different solutions have different developing times. We carry Norvell Rapid One, which has a development time of 1-3 hours, and Norvell Venetian, which has a development time of 6-12 hours.
-
HOW DO I MAINTAIN MY SPRAY TAN?Apply moisturizer morning and evening after your first post-tan shower. Moisturize daily thereafter. Hydrated skin is essential in maintaining a longer lasting tan. Do not use an exfoliator scrub until you feel it's time to take off the old tan. We also recommend professional scrub treatments in between sprays to renew your skin and get the maximum benefits of your spray tan.
-
HOW LONG WILL THE SPRAY TAN LAST?Spray tans typically last between 5-7 days, however, with the correct preparation and maintenance they can last up to 10 days.
-
IS SUNLESS TANNING SAFE?YES! The FDA approved Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a Sugar Cane derivative that results in the tan, for safety, in 1973. When applied to the skin, DHA penetrates only the top layer of skin, it does not absorb into the bloodstream.
-
HOW DO I EXTEND MY SUNLESS TAN?Clients often ask how to extend their sunless tan beyond the customary 5-7 days. Sunless tanning treatments affect both the melanin and the top layer of skin, which naturally "sloughs off" each day. The best way to slow this natural exfoliation is to follow these tips: Moisturize twice daily for at least 10 days after the treatment. Don't stop moisturizing just because the tan fades. Avoid heavy sweating, hot tubs, Jacuzzis, massages, or other activates that make your skin exfoliate rapidly. Use a tan extender, which contains a low level of DHA (sunless tanning ingredient) that will give your tan a boost that lasts between to 10-12 days.
